Office of the Attorney General

According to state law, the Office of the Attorney General is responsible for representing the state of Washington, its officials, departments, boards, commissions, and agencies. The legal advice for Washington State University, a state agency, is handled by the Washington State University Division of the Attorney General’s Office (AGO). The office is located on the WSU Pullman campus in the French Administration Building, Room 332.

The attorneys in the WSU Division are appointed by the Washington State Attorney General to be the legal advisors to WSU’s President and Board of Regents, and to institute or defend all legal proceedings on behalf of the University.

Lawsuits Against WSU Personnel

The Attorney General and their assistants may defend actions and proceedings against any state officer or employee acting in their official capacity (see BPPM 10.15).

Private Attorneys

No state officer or state employee may employ a private attorney to represent the state.

At their own cost and expense, individual state officers or employees may obtain private representation through private attorneys (see BPPM 10.15).
