{"id":21722,"date":"2016-10-18T15:41:41","date_gmt":"2016-10-18T22:41:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/policies.wsu.edu\/prf\/?page_id=21722"},"modified":"2025-07-07T11:21:37","modified_gmt":"2025-07-07T18:21:37","slug":"sppm-2-40","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/policies.wsu.edu\/prf\/index\/manuals\/safety-policies-procedures-manual\/sppm-2-40\/","title":{"rendered":"2.40 First Aid Training"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading wsu-font-size--xxmedium\">Safety Policies and Procedures Manual<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First Aid Training<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-row wsu-row--single\" >\r\n    \n<div class=\"wsu-column\"  style=\"\">\r\n\t\n\n<p><strong>SPPM 2.40<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>For more information contact:<\/strong><br>&nbsp; &nbsp;Environmental Health and Safety<br>&nbsp; &nbsp;509-335-3041<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3>Overview<\/h3>\n<p>University units are to ensure that personnel trained in first aid are available to provide quick and effective first aid to all employees.<\/p>\n<h3>Responsibilities<\/h3>\n<p>Supervisors are responsible for making sure that personnel trained in first aid are available to provide quick and effective first aid to employees.<\/p>\n<h4>Unit-Selected First Aid Responders<\/h4>\n<p>Departments are to consider the following factors when determining the number of trained employees required to ensure that a first aid responder is always available:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Workplace locations (e.g., employees in one building, multiple buildings, and\/or remote locations)<\/li>\n<li>Work shifts and schedules<\/li>\n<li>Number of employees in the unit and at different workplace locations<\/li>\n<li>Primary duties of the employees (e.g., administrative, industrial, laboratory, construction, or agricultural)<\/li>\n<li>Type of hazards to which employees may be exposed<\/li>\n<li>Employee leave schedules<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Additional Responders<\/h4>\n<p>In addition to unit-selected first aid responders, University administration recommends that the following individuals receive first aid training:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Supervisors<\/li>\n<li>Lead personnel<\/li>\n<li>Individuals responsible for student field trips<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Employees Working Alone<\/h4>\n<p>Employees working alone are to have access to and be trained in how to access adequate first-aid services. Such employees are to be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First-aid trained to self-treat injuries and\/or occupational illnesses; or<\/li>\n<li>Able to call an on-site first-aid trained co-worker; or<\/li>\n<li>Able to call 911.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Supervisors of Employees Working Alone<\/h5>\n<p>Supervisors of employees working alone are to have more than one person do the work or contact Environmental Health and Safety (EH&amp;S) if such employees may be exposed to either of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hazards that cannot be adequately controlled by one person.<\/li>\n<li>Hazards that could potentially result in severe injuries or occupational illnesses affecting the employees&#8217; ability to access adequate first-aid services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Environmental Health and Safety&nbsp;and the supervisor conduct a risk assessment and develop procedures to assure adequate first-aid services are available.<\/p>\n<h3>Bloodborne Pathogens<\/h3>\n<p>Units requiring employees to provide first aid, as stated in the employees&#8217; position descriptions, are to implement Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plans&nbsp;(see <a href=\"https:\/\/policies.wsu.edu\/prf\/index\/manuals\/safety-policies-procedures-manual\/sppm-2-44\/\">SPPM 2.44<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Contact EH&amp;S for assistance with developing and implementing a Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan.<\/p>\n<h3>First Aid Training Courses<\/h3>\n<p>Following are a number of first aid training options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>EH&amp;S offers first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automated external defibrillator (AED) certification and review classes at WSU Pullman. See the Training Courses area of <a href=\"https:\/\/ehs.wsu.edu\/training\/\">EH&amp;S Training<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>University Recreation offers first aid, CPR, and AED certification and review classes at WSU Pullman.\n<p>Several classes are offered each semester. See <a style=\"font-size: inherit\" href=\"http:\/\/urec.wsu.edu\">University Recreation<\/a><span style=\"font-size: inherit\"> for class dates and information.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>A unit may elect to have an employee become a certified first aid trainer.
