Remove all spent, leaking, or ruptured batteries prior to surplusing equipment. Submit the batteries to Environmental Health and Safety (EH&amp;S) for recycling with a completed <a href=\"http:\/\/forms.ehs.wsu.edu\/Main.aspx\">Chemical Collection Request<\/a>. See <a href=\"https:\/\/policies.wsu.edu\/prf\/index\/manuals\/safety-policies-procedures-manual\/sppm-5-66\/\">SPPM 5.66<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>EH&amp;S accepts all types of batteries including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Alkaline<\/li>\n<li>Mercury (e.g., watch batteries)<\/li>\n<li>Lithium (e.g., computer clock batteries)<\/li>\n<li>Silver oxide (e.g., camera batteries)<\/li>\n<li>Nickel cadmium (e.g., NiCad or NiCad rechargeable batteries)<\/li>\n<li>Lead acid (e.g., gel cell batteries, car batteries)<\/li>\n<li>Nickel metal hydride (NiMH)<\/li>\n<li>Titanium<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more details go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ehs.wsu.edu\/chemical-waste\/battery-recycling\/\">EH&amp;S Battery Recycling website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Recycling Procedures<\/h4>\n<p>Complete the following steps to submit batteries to EH&amp;S for recycling:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Place leaking, ruptured, or spent batteries in a sealed and impermeable container, e.g., plastic bucket with lid.<\/li>\n<li>Affix a Dangerous Waste Label to the container. See <a href=\"https:\/\/policies.wsu.edu\/prf\/index\/manuals\/safety-policies-procedures-manual\/sppm-5-66\/\">SPPM 5.66<\/a> for instructions to obtain and complete the label.<\/li>\n<li>Complete a <a href=\"http:\/\/forms.ehs.wsu.edu\/Main.aspx\">Chemical Collection Request<\/a>. See <a href=\"https:\/\/policies.wsu.edu\/prf\/index\/manuals\/safety-policies-procedures-manual\/sppm-5-66\/\">SPPM 5.66<\/a> for instructions to obtain and complete the form.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After receiving the completed CCR, EH&amp;S collects the batteries from the laboratory, office, or work area.<\/p>\n<h4>Item Evaluation Form<\/h4>\n<p>After removing the batteries, evaluate the equipment for the presence of any hazardous contamination. Attach a completed Item Evaluation form to the item. If the batteries were leaking or ruptured, the item may need to be decontaminated prior to surplus collection.
