The list below provides examples of items which may contain PCB components. The list is not exhaustive.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Air conditioners<\/li>\n<li>Capacitors<\/li>\n<li>Equipment with electrical motors (capacitors within)<\/li>\n<li>Freezers<\/li>\n<li>Furnace blower motors<\/li>\n<li>Hydraulic equipment (especially high temperature applications)<\/li>\n<li>Light ballasts (fluorescent)<\/li>\n<li>Microwave ovens<\/li>\n<li>Refrigerators<\/li>\n<li>Switches<\/li>\n<li>Transformers<\/li>\n<li>X-ray machines, including the following types:\n<ul>\n<li>Cabinet<\/li>\n<li>Crystallography<\/li>\n<li>Diffraction<\/li>\n<li>Fluorescence<\/li>\n<li>Veterinary units<!--\/li--><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 id=\"One_1\">1.1   Item Evaluation<\/h4>\n<p>Prior to surplusing, the department must attach a completed Item Evaluation form listing the presence and location of any PCB-containing component within an item.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"One_2\">1.2   PCB Contamination Criteria<\/h4>\n<p>PCB contamination is defined as \u2265 2 ppm PCB. State law regulates PCB-contaminated components as dangerous waste. It is illegal to dispose of such waste in the trash (see <a href=\"https:\/\/policies.wsu.edu\/prf\/index\/manuals\/safety-policies-procedures-manual\/sppm-5-66\/\">SPPM 5.66<\/a>). Contact Environmental Health and Safety (EH&amp;S) for assistance; telephone 509-335-3041.<\/p>\n<p><b>No PCB<\/b> contamination is defined as less than 2 ppm PCB.<\/p>\n<p><b>Non-PCB<\/b> contaminated waste, containing 2 \u2264 50 ppm PCB, is a regulated waste, in accordance with state law.<\/p>\n<p>To determine whether an oil-filled component contains PCB contamination:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Call EH&amp;S for assistance; telephone 509-335-3041.<\/li>\n<li>Look for a label affixed by the manufacturer stating <b>No PCB <\/b>or<b> &lt; 1 ppm PCB at time of manufacture<\/b>.<br>If such a label is present, the component is not a PCB waste.<br>All other oil-filled components are managed as PCB waste.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 id=\"One_3\">1.3   Notification<\/h4>\n<p>Departments which have appliances for surplus or disposal must notify Surplus Stores or the new owner of any potential PCB contents.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"One_4\">1.4   Leaking or Ruptured Component<\/h4>\n<p>Notify EH&amp;S of any leaking or ruptured PCB-filled component; telephone 509-335-3041.
