{"id":22609,"date":"2021-10-15T08:34:32","date_gmt":"2021-10-15T15:34:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/policies.wsu.edu\/prf\/?page_id=22609"},"modified":"2025-11-07T14:19:11","modified_gmt":"2025-11-07T22:19:11","slug":"bppm-80-85","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/policies.wsu.edu\/prf\/index\/manuals\/business-policies-and-procedures-manual\/bppm-80-85\/","title":{"rendered":"80.85 Energy Conservation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading wsu-font-size--xxmedium\">University Policies and Procedures Manual&nbsp;(previously Business Policies and Procedures Manual)<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Energy Conservation<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-row wsu-row--single\" >\r\n    \n<div class=\"wsu-column\"  style=\"\">\r\n\t\n\n<p><strong>UPPM 80.85<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>For more information contact:<\/strong><br>\n&nbsp; &nbsp;Facilities Services, Operations <br>\n&nbsp; &nbsp;509-335-9000<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3>Policy<\/h3>\n<p>WSU Facilities Services coordinates the energy conservation program.<\/p>\n<p>The program is designed to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make efficient use of existing systems.<\/li>\n<li>Conserve University resources.<\/li>\n<li>Protect the environment.<\/li>\n<li>Follow state and federal energy conservation recommendations and guidelines.<\/li>\n<li>Research potential energy incentives available from applicable public utilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Procedure<\/h4>\n<p>Telephone Facilities Services for assistance, information, or recommendations regarding energy conservation.<\/p>\n<h3>Guidelines<\/h3>\n<h4>Department Administrators<\/h4>\n<p>Departmental administrators including department chairs, managers, and other staff are responsible for energy used within their units including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Implementing energy conservation measures.<\/li>\n<li>Coordinating with Facilities Services systems maintenance personnel.<\/li>\n<li>Grouping night classes to minimize the number of buildings open at night.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>WSU Employees<\/h4>\n<p>All WSU employees have a responsibility for energy conservation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Turn off any unnecessary lights.<\/li>\n<li>Turn off fans, coffee pots, and other small electric appliances when not in use.<\/li>\n<li>Use only electric space heaters authorized by Facilities Services. Do not leave turned-on electrical heaters unattended (see <a href=\"https:\/\/policies.wsu.edu\/prf\/index\/manuals\/safety-policies-procedures-manual\/sppm-8-50\/\">SPPM 8.50<\/a>).<br>&nbsp;<br><strong>Note:<\/strong> Facilities Services strongly discourages the use of portable electric space heaters because they consume inordinate amounts of electrical energy, may overload electrical systems, and are a serious fire hazard.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Facilities Services<\/h4>\n<p>Systems maintenance personnel analyze and modify heating, air conditioning, and electrical systems in University buildings.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Set heating thermostats to maintain an average interior temperature of 68-72 degrees Fahrenheit during the winter.<\/li>\n<li>Set cooling thermostats in air conditioned buildings to maintain an average interior temperature of 76-78 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer.<\/li>\n<li>Set water heating thermostats for hot water used in washrooms and similar areas to deliver 110 degrees Fahrenheit water to the point of use.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain lighting levels in accordance with IEEE recommendations in offices, classrooms, general-use areas, corridors, and similar areas.
